IONA, ISLE OF
ABBEY
SMITH, P R: Window in south gable of cap house. 1997. STRACHAN, D: 1-l light in North Clerestory, St Columba, gift of R T Skinner of Edinburgh. Dedicated 24th Sept 1939. 2 x 1-l light in North Clerestory, St Bridgid and St Patrick. Presented by William Chammey of Dublin in memory of his sisters Harriet F Chammey (1864- 1896) and Sophia W Chammey (1857 - 1908). Dedicated 24th Sept 1939. The three windows were designed as a whole: "The general underlying content consists in an attempt to typify various aspects of the human spirit - vigour, as of the ??? (Columba); the gentle elusiveness of the woodland spirit, and the serenity of saintliness. Columba is meant to convey the image of a new dawn breaking over the sea, a new message emerging." The background to Bridgid is a grove of oaks in which is a Fire Shrine - meant to link up with the earlier Fire Goddess behind the St Bridgid story. "Her arm, supporting the lamp, breaks across this with a tender line - fire superseded by its own higher form, light" St Patrick - Benediction. A serpent underfoot, green hills and rocky coast behind. A shamrock is used as a diaper pattern. WILSON, W (Studio): 1-1 South window in North Transept, St Columba (but much younger than usually depicted) Michael Chapel. In memory of the Rev. Dr Kenneth MacLeod, who collaborated with Mrs Kennedy Fraser in her "Songs of The Hebrides" collections. 1965. Illustrated. KIRN

LOCHBUIE ISLE of MULL
LOCHBUIE CHAPEL AND MAUSOLEUM
Well, it isn't actually stained glass - some of the roof slates have been made out of clear glass, while inside, stars have been cut out of the wooden roof and then pieces of coloured glass attached over the holes so the ceiling is studded with coloured stars… magic!
