McCARTNEY/Fr NINIAN: 3 windows. Window above altar shows Jesus leading a throng of virgins through a garden in flower - the land last, promised and now regained in heaven. Late 19th century stained glass. There is some stained glass not visible to the casual visitor. Very poorly lit window in East wall North transept - Virgin? The Lady Chapel; window behind the altar was erected in memory of Alexander Bonnyman who came from a local family and who died in Tennessee. McLELLAN, S: North transept 16 foot diameter (or 18, depends who you read) round window in slab and concrete, "Woman clothed with the sun", (Book of Revelations 12) symbolises the Universe divided between the darkness of the Dragon and the Light of Christ shining through the Woman. The inner circle represents the earth and from it spring wheat (bread for the Body of Christ) and grapes (wine for the Blood of Christ). Donated by Neil and Philippa Petrie. 1963. Weighs a ton! The whole composition is inspired by the upward-growth of a flower. The lower windows symbolise the reflection of Mary in Christ's life, thus: Middle left: The House of Gold as the Divine Dwelling Place; The Lily for Chastity; The Mirror to reflect Christ; The Enclosed Garden for Virginity; Middle centre: The Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit (Isaiah II); Middle right: The Star to herald Christ; The Rose of Sharon; The Gate of Heaven. Lower left: The Crown of Mary and The Rosary ; Lower centre: The Lily among the Thorns - for Mary the sinless; Lower right: The Star that leads to Christ. Illustrated McCARTNEY, C: 1956. The Four Evangelists panel, diameter 54, 1962. Br GILBERT TAYLOR: South wall abstract composition around the letters Alpha and Omega, a large central Cross and several smaller ones. Donated by Neil and Philippa Petrie. West wall, North transept shows SS. Benedict and Gregory, and was the gift of James Boyle. 3-l & tracery, North window, Transept Chapel (aka Chapel of St John) The Visitation, in memory of Elizabeth Muir of California, d 1962. Mid-60s. Illustrated. East wall, Transept Chapel shows the Lamb of God and the symbols of the four Evangelists. The gift of the Grant family. East wall of the Chancel show Christ in glory bearing the bread and wine of the Eucharist, and in the lower lancets, vines and grapes, corn and bread.
